Weekly Business Tips With Councilor Jody Williams

Learning a new language can be a goal on someone’s bucket list. This may not include Spanish since Spanish can be classified as a secondary language in Belize, the US and other parts. In addition, many persons may want to take French or Italian classes or courses to learn the language of Love, but finding love in Italy or France or meeting someone from those countries can be pretty slim. From a business perspective, if we really want a plus in our career, learning a new language is key, even if it’s the basics. For example, if you trade/offer services or products with our Latin American neighbors, learn Spanish, or try to master it with advanced courses. If you trade with Taiwan, try to enroll in a Mandarin course, even for the basics like Hello, How are you, thanks, etc. If you are heading to a tradeshow or trade mission to Germany, try to learn some German weeks before the event. I can say from experience that at least trying to speak a native language in a foreign country in a business meeting with big buyers can land you a big business deal. Is it not trading goods or offering services to any country with different languages? No problem! Sit down and evaluate various options to choose from and try to anticipate a potential place you may visit or want to do business within the near future. This also applies to local Belize, so learning Garifuna, Mandarin, Maya, and German can help do business locally with our ethnic cultures. Today let’s try to learn a new language for business instead of love. English is already sufficient. While this may be only one part of the entire business process, I will cover another tip or advice next week.
