U.S. Embassy webinar for Produce Industry Stakeholders on FSMA Produce Safety Rule

U.S. Embassy webinar for Produce Industry Stakeholders on FSMA Produce Safety Rule

  • August 5, 2021

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) will host several webinars for produce industry stakeholders involved in the production and harvesting of fresh fruits and vegetables and produce safety with a view of supplying for the American market.

The initiative is to support awareness of the US FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) for produce industry stakeholders in Latin America and the Caribbean.  These webinars will inform governments and produce stakeholders in the regions about the requirements for importing into the United States.  This will result in greater FSMA compliance among producers and exporters, reduce the risk of trade barriers, and help FDA to ensure a safe supply of fresh fruits and vegetables for U.S. citizens.

The one-hour webinars will be scheduled on a regional basis in July and August 2021, with sessions to be conducted in Spanish, Portuguese, or English consistent with the target audience. The English-language session on Thursday August 5, 2021 is the recommended option for participants in Belize.  Click HERE to Register and remember to select the option: Caribbean/English Speaking Stakeholders Thursday, August 5th, 2021.

    BACKGROUND Information

The Produce Safety Rule (PSR) is part of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) signed into law on January 4, 2011.  The PSR standards rely on a foundation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and compliance with the PSR is an important requirement for the export of certain fresh fruits and vegetables to the United States.  FSMA outreach helps foreign producers, packers, and distributors comply with FSMA, including the PSR.  Farms that export certain fresh fruits and vegetables to the United States may be subject to the PSR.  The FSMA Foreign Supplier Verification Programs for Food Importers (FSVP) rule requires importers to verify that foreign farms comply with the PSR.

Please find attached a flyer with further information on the webinars, registration dates and other information.  Also attached is a document listing numerous FDA resources relevant to the U.S. FDA’s Produce Safety Rule (PSR) and Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP).
