Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continues to rise and affect our society in the Caribbean. The treatment of these diseases – diabetes, cardiovascular disease, various cancers, liver disease – is costing governments a lot and they are looking for solutions. Research data has shown that the main risk factors of NCDs are tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.
As part of the regional effort to address this challenge, CARICOM Trade and Health Ministers recently mandated that the CARICOM secretariat convenes a working group to look at the harmful use of alcohol, which will examine and make recommendations to reduce the impact of these issues on NCDs. Here in Belize the government has published an action plan for the control of NCDs (2013-2023) and established an NCD Commission.
The BCCI recognizes this issue as one which will impact its members, both as producers of alcoholic beverages, and as consumers and companies operating in the value-added chain. On the overall, the Chamber sees the need to look at the big picture, encompassing the physical, social and economic factors on the country.
The BCCI, in collaboration with its members of the beverage alcohol sector will be holding a Consultation meeting to discuss the topic of “Responsible drinking and the harmful use of alcohol” on Wednesday March 18th at the Chamber’s Conference room on 2nd Floor, WithField Tower, 4792 Coney Drive, Belize City.
