ILO Roundtable Discussion: Protecting the Rights of Migrant Workers in Irregular Situations
International migration has become an integral part of the global economy. Together with their families, migrant workers represent most of the international migrants living outside their country of origin today. Yet, many people continue to move without access to regular migration options. The drivers of these movements and the means through which individuals end up in irregular status are multiple and complex.
The ILO will host a Roundtable Discussion on “Protecting the Rights of Migrant Workers in Irregular Situations” with the objectives of:
- Sharing the ILO approach and International Labour Standards on the topic; and disseminating the research findings and emerging good practices documented in the Compendium
- Hosting a diverse range of expert speakers to share their perspectives and approaches
The Roundtable will be part of a series of weekly events held within the framework of the Labour Migration Academy, organized by the International Training Center of the ILO in Turin. In addition it takes place before the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Meeting of the Friends of the Forum (22-23 November 2022). The 2022-23 Chair of the GFMD has chosen “the impact of climate change on human mobility” as the main topic – major driver of migration, including irregular migration.
The Roundtable Discussion will feature national and global experts and practitioners as well as representatives of the private sector and workers’ organizations. The Roundtable Discussion will also welcome the participation of Mr Felipe González Morales, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants.
