Business sector Senator Kevin Herrera presented his position in the Senate on December 6th 20201 in opposition to the Sugar Industry (Amendment) Bill 2021.
The Senator cited great concern with the bill’s proposal to confer powers upon the Minister to be able to hear appeals from parties aggrieved by a decision of the Sugarcane Control Board. Though acknowledging the importance of the industry to the Belizean economy, the Senator called for the government to amend the Bill to better address the issues it is intended to tackle. Supported by other private sector Senators, the Bill was not taken to a vote and was instead sent to Committee for amendment.
